Staying Private on a Public internet
As the U.S government attacks net neutrality, Americans find themselves in an ever-increasing war in the protection of civil liberties and privacy. As long as the rich and corrupt run the show, technology will have to be the fulcrum that shifts the balance of power. That being said, we will discuss several methods of protecting privacy and loosening the choke hold that big corporations have over our tech lives.
1) VPN (Virtual Private Networks). This tech creates a private encrypted data channel over the Public Internet. Without this tech, using the internet would be like you walking down the street in transparent clothes. Although you are clothed, people can still see what is underneath. The problems with VPN's are that ISP's can still intercept traffic (esp. torrent traffic ) , break or throttle the connections and/or use your DNS queries to tell them what sites you are contacting. Not good
2) Seedboxes - they provide an off-site method of performing the heavy lifting for downloading p2p files but can be expensive. A seedbox is better than just using a VPN because you are using resources of another network for p2p traffic.
3) Proxy networks (e.g. TOR ) - redirect traffic to hide your IP location. Most proxies however, are not designed to handle p2p traffic and are slow.
This is where tech services like Seedr come in. Seedr is a hybrid cloud service
that allows you to add a layer of anonymity by offering the off-site loading of torrents, while preserving bandwidth and privacy. I can hear some people saying, "If am not doing anything illegal, why should I care who is watching? " Let us put the privacy issue another way. When you bathe or shower (if you do ), would you allow your government to install a camera in your bathroom to see if you were smoking weed or having sex trying to relax after a hard day ? " If you said no to the latter, then obviously you care about privacy !
Let us be clear. We are NOT promoting or condoning illegal activity in any shape or form.
We just want to inform people that they have tech options as it relates to cybersecurity and privacy.
Of all the cloud services we have tested, Seedr seems to meet or exceed its claims. Torrents seem to load fast (e.g. 1GB torrent typically loads in less than 1 minute. Of course, your download speed will depend on the speed of your broadband connection
